With 48 entries, this year’s Nano + Art competition set a new record for participation. The result of the competition, which was held for the third time and targets female students, degree holders, and young scientists, has now been announced in the Wolfgang Industrial Park at the invitation of its sponsor, Evonik Services GmbH.

"KaNanodinsky" by Kathrin Schultheiss

In the Nano + Art competition, contestants prepare artistic photos from nano-research according to a predefined topic. The idea is to promote greater knowledge of this future-oriented technology, present it in all of its facets, and reduce apprehension about the field. The competition specifically targets female scientists for the purpose of encouraging them to consider a career in nanotechnology.

The contestant the judges felt best addressed this year’s topic “Order and Chaos” was Anja Reckmann of the University of Cologne, physical chemistry, and her work Suchbild (“Search Image”). The image is a scanning electron micrograph of a layer of aluminum compound called aluminum tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) (Alq3). To the viewer, the image looks like a number of small, swarming figures. The second-place winner is Kathrin Schultheiss, with her work KaNanodinsky. Steffi Deiter won third prize for Land der Nanopyramiden ("Land of the Nanopyramids").
