Expertise

Degussa is one of the world’s leading suppliers of products based on fine particles, especially carbon blacks, for which it has annual production capacity of 1.4 million metric tons. Carbon blacks are often mentioned in connection with nanotechology. They comprise fine particles that have a major influence on the performance of technical-grade rubber. For example, they are used to give auto tires a good grip, low rolling resistance and a long service life. They are also used as pigments in a wide range of applications including paints, inks and plastics.

Another fine-particle product manufactured by Degussa is AEROSIL® fumed silica. AEROSIL® increases the elasticity and tear resistance of silicone, improves the free-flow properties of powders, optimizes the flow behavior and scratch resistance of coatings and is used as a polishing agent for microchips.

Degussa is very well placed to utilize the benefits of nanotechnology. Firstly, it has years of experience in producing and handling fine particles. Secondly, through its Nanomaterials Project House (2000–2003), it has systematically extended its strong global technological position in the production of nanomaterials. The new products generated by this Project House were initially commercialized by Degussa Advanced Nanomaterials, an internal start-up established specifically for this purpose. These activities have now been transferred to the Aerosil & Silanes Business Unit. Moreover, through Creavis Technologies & Innovation, Degussa is systematically moving into new areas of business and integrating its expertise into innovative applications such as printable electronics and lithium ion batteries.
